Saku Koivu could potentially be heading to the Devils. While there are many teams trying to woo the former Canadiens captain, New Jersey has become a late entrant according to TFP's David Pagnotta.
This is a very interesting prospect for the Devils as they are openly looking to move in a more youthful direction. According to a press conference on Thursday, Devils' GM Lou Lamoriello says that its time to see what his young stars can do. That is one of the major reasons behind allowing veterans John Madden and Brian Gionta walk on Wednesday.
Speculation has Koivu wanting a 3 or 4 year deal, but its presumed that the Devils would not be willing to go the fourth because of his age.
However, adding a veteran leader could be worth it. The new players coming up need that veteran leadership and if Koivu can bring that, plus his scoring touch to New Jersey, good things could happen.
If the Devils fail to retain Brendan Shannahan, Koivu might be a younger, but slightly more expensive option.
